Costa Tosses Complete Game as Baseball Plays at Queens
Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2017) – Despite a complete eight innings pitched and a game high six strikeouts from senior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J. / Sussex County CC) the Mercy College baseball team fell 1-0 to Queens College on Wednesday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium.
The Mavericks (7-17, 1-7 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Knights (10-13, 4-7 ECC) have won three games in a row.
Costa allowed only four hits in the loss. The Mavericks offense was led by sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) and freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y. /Marlboro), who both recorded two hits in the loss. Seniors Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Quinnipiac University), and Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y. / Ulster CC) , along with freshman Spencer Goyette (Honesdale, Pa. / Honesdale) and junior Dee Boyles (Sidney, N.Y. / Fulton Montgomery CC) all added one hit for the Mavericks offense.
Billy Riches recorded the lone RBI of the game for the Knights. Joel Mendez, Jonathan Temenak and Joseph Pidoto also recorded one hit a piece. James McGee earned the win on the mound for Queens, throwing four innings in relief and striking out five batters.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Knights were able to score their lone run of this afternoon's contest. A single to right center field from Billy Riches would eventually bring Joseph Pidoto home and able to score on a Mavericks error. The Knights recorded two of their four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
The Mavericks had multiple scoring opportunities later on in the contest, when they were able to put runners on first and second in the top of the seventh but were unable to capitalize due to tough Knights pitching. Mercy found themselves with three players on base in the top of the eighth inning when Mooradian singled to left center, followed by walks for senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) and Arcabascio. However, the Mavericks were unable to capitalize and eventually fell to the Knights 1-0 in the top of the ninth inning.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday afternoon as they travel to ECC foe Molloy College. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
