Three Record Six or More Points as No. 16 Women's Lacrosse Sets School Record for Wins With Victory Over STAC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2017) – Powered by three Mavericks recording six or more points, the No. 16 Mercy College women's lacrosse team set a school record for wins in a season with a 19-4 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (13-1, 4-1 ECC) have won four games in a row and break the previous school record of 12 wins set last season. Mercy also picks up their first win over the Spartans (2-9, 1-3 ECC) since 2012.

Leading the way for the Mavericks was junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) who had a career-high eight goals and nine points. Sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) added five goals, an assist and an impressive 19 draw controls. Freshman Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) contributed two goals and four assists and junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) netted three assists. Graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) both recorded a goal and two assists and freshman Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) scored twice. Senior Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the defense with four caused turnovers and had one ground bal. Senior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) played the first 48:45 in net with six saves to earn the win.

The Spartans were led by Caroline Finnen who had a team-high two goals and an assist, while Laura Delorenzo played the first half in net with six saves to take the loss.

Mercy looked to continue their reign of dominance over opponents and Haines got the Mavericks on the board just 14 seconds in to make it 1-0. Davidson followed with her first goal of the contest at the 24:12 mark to increase the lead to 2-0.

Alyson Brennan tallied a goal with 21:08 left in the first half to get the Spartans within one, 2-1. St. Thomas Aquinas looked to tie the game up, but the Mavericks would have none of it and followed with four straight goals to build a 6-1 lead. DiFusco and Isnardi started the run with goals before Sergio concluded it with her two goals of the game.

Finnen scored for the Spartans to make it 6-2, but Mercy ended the half with four more goals to head into halftime up 10-2. Isnardi and Sanchez scored to make it 8-2 and Davidson capped off the half with two straight.

Davidson opened the scoring in the second half to put the Mavericks up 11-2. Finnen recorded her second of the game to bring the Spartans within 11-3. However, Mercy put the game away with another 4-0 run to take a 15-3 advantage with 15:26 remaining. Isnardi found the back of the net twice and Davidson and Sanchez added a goal apiece to put the game out of reach.

St. Thomas Aquinas scored their final goal of the game with 11:15 left before Davidson added three more goals to make it 18-4. Isnardi capped off the scoring with 3:19 on the clock, off an assist from Jehle, to finish off the win.

Mercy held a 34-14 edge in shots and a 21-4 edge in draw controls, while ground balls were tied at 15-15.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 22nd when they host LIU Post for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
