UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2017) – Powered by a four-hit shutout from senior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y. / Islip), the Mercy College baseball team earned their first shutout win of the 2017 season when they defeated Molloy College 3-0 in game one of a four game series on Friday afternoon.

The Mavericks (8-17, 2-7 ECC) snap a four-game losing streak, while the Lions (12-19, 6-6 ECC) drop to .500 in ECC play.

Mercy was led by sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill), who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Quinnipiac University) added two hits and one run scored. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y. / Marlboro), junior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and seniors Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) and Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y. / Ulster County CC) all recorded one hit in the victory. Nalbone went the distance with seven strikeouts to earn his third win of the season.

Anthony Alberghina and Angelo Navetta both went 1-for-3 for the Lions. Ronald Bauer made the start on the mound and went the first six innings with two runs allowed to take the loss.

The Mavericks were able to get on the board in the second inning of play, when freshman David Deberardinis (Fishkill, N.Y. / John Jay) was able to grab an RBI for the Mavericks off a fielder's choice, bringing Arcabascio home to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 for the following two innings.

The Mavericks would record three quick outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put them back in the batter's box in the top of the fifth inning. Despite having two outs on the board, the Mavericks were able to improve their lead to 2-0 when junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y./ Herkimer County CC) walked to first base after a full count, bringing sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville) back to home plate.

Neither team was able to score for the following three innings. An RBI from Mendez through the left side would bring junior Ralph Pasols (Middletown, N.Y./ Orange CC) home for the final run of the contest. The Lions found themselves in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth with two men left on base. However, Molloy eventually fell to the Mavericks 3-0 in nine innings of play.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Molloy College in an ECC doubleheader set for 12 and 2 p.m
