BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2017) – Despite a complete game from senior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and RBI from senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) and sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Sunday afternoon at LIU Post Baseball Field.

The Mavericks (7-14, 1-4 ECC) have dropped two of their last three games, while the Pioneers (11-11, 3-2 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play.

Mendez went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y. / Marlboro) went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Murphy recorded two hits for the Mavericks and one RBI. Nalbone pitched eight innings with no earned runs allowed and five strikeouts.

Five Pioneers recorded a hit in the win. Jake DeCarli also went the distance with two earned runs allowed and eight strikeouts to pick up the win.

The Mavericks would score their two runs of the contest in the top of the first inning, recording four hits. The scoring began when Mooradian doubled to left center, getting on base quickly for Mercy. An RBI single from Mendez would bring Mooradian home to get the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Murphy allowed the Mavericks to earn their second and final run of the game when his single brought Mendez home. The Mavericks closed the top of the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

LIU Post did not allow the Mavericks to hold their lead for long, as they also were able to record two runs in the first inning. Despite having two outs on the board, the Pioneers were able to score two runs off of no hits and one Mercy fielding error. The first inning game to an end with a tie score of 2-2.

The Pioneers were able to increase their lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning when Dave Brehm flied out to right field to allow Joe Piscitelli to score unearned. The next four innings remained scoreless due to a solid pitching and fielding from both squads.

LIU Post was able to put the game away in the bottom of the eighth inning when they were able to score the winning run of the contest off of a Mercy error. The Pioneers eventually earned the 4-2 victory after a scoreless top of the ninth.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action Wednesday, April 5th when they host Molloy College for their Making Strides Pink Game set for 3:30 p.m.
