Nalbone Tosses Three-Hit Shutout to Give Baseball 2-0 Win Over Queens
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2017) – Powered by a complete game three-hit shutout from senior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 2-0 victory over ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-20, 3-10 ECC) snap a three-game losing streak with the win, while the Knights (11-17, 5-11 ECC) have dropped three games in a row.
Nalbone had 11 strikeouts and in the process broke the school record for career strikeouts. The senior now has 196 strikeouts for his career, surpassing the previous mark of 192 strikeouts. Nalbone also picked up his fourth win of the season, giving him 14 for his career, one shy of tying the school record. Nalbone also set the school record for most starts in a career with his 36th today.
Senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) led the Mavericks at the plate with a 2-for-4 afternoon with two RBI, while senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) and juniors John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Dee Boyles (Sidney, N.Y./Fulton Montgomery CC) recorded hits.
Queens was led by Karl Klesin who went 1-for-3 with a double, while Joseph Broderick allowed two runs in eight innings of work to take the loss.
A pitcher's duel broke out in the series opener with both pitchers tossing four scoreless innings to begin the contest. After Nalbone put the Knights down in order in the top of the fifth, the Mavericks took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs.
Sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) led off the inning with a walk and later advanced to second on a Boyles single. Arcabascio then followed with a two-RBI double down the right field line that scored both Murphy and Boyles to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
Nalbone continued to deal and put together two straight 1-2-3 innings to keep the score at 2-0. The Knights put a runner on second in the eighth, but Nalbone induced a flyout to center to end the threat.
After Nalbone retired the first two batters in the ninth, Klesin doubled to left field to put a runner in scoring position. However, Nalbone ended the contest with his 11th strikeout to give the Mavericks the win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks are back in action when they play at Queens tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
