DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2017) – Despite two hits on the day from junior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College softball team dropped 4-1 and 5-0 decisions on Senior Day to No. 17 Caldwell University on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.

In a ceremony prior the game Head Coach Mike Fazio recognized seniors Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North), Jackie Kielty (Middleboro, Mass./Dean College), Katiana Golino (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson).

The Mavericks (24-10) have their four-game winning streak snapped, while the Cougars (34-11) have won six games in a row.

Game 1: Caldwell 4, Mercy 1

The opening game remained scoreless until the top of the third when Carly Testa singled home Melissa Rini to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long as the Mavericks tied the game up in the bottom of the inning as they scored an unearned run after singles by juniors Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs), Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) and Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC). McCormick went on to score after an error by Caldwell.

It stayed 1-1 heading to the seventh inning as Kielty and Sydney Ponto posted zeroes. After a pair of hit by pitches and a sacrifice bunt, Jessie Johnston gave Caldwell the lead for good with a three-run home run to center field that made it 4-1.

The Mavericks went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Cougars the game one win.

Wootten went 2-for-3, while Lemus, Pellizzaro, McCormick and freshman Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) all recorded hits. Kielty went 6 1/3 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Ponto went the distance for Caldwell with seven strikeouts to earn the win.

Game 2: Caldwell 5, Mercy 0

The nightcap saw the Cougar jump out to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run off Mercy starter McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich./Monroe). The score stayed at 1-0 as Cusumano and Jessie Johnston put zeroes up on the board until the top of the fifth.

Caldwell plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Marisa Monasseri recorded a two-RBI single to right field before Testa drove in a run later in the inning on a fielder's choice to end the scoring in the frame.

Monasseri added on another run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to third base that increased the lead to 5-0. The Mavericks could not score in the bottom half of the inning and the Cougars emerged with the sweep.

Junior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), Gross and Golino recorded hits for Mercy, while Cusumano allowed three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
