Murphy Posts Three Hits and Two RBI as Baseball Hosts Queens
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y (Apr. 23, 2017) - Despite three hits and two RBI from sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to ECC foe Queens College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (10-22, 4-12 ECC) drop the season series to the Knights (13-18, 7-12 ECC), 3-2.
Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y. / Marlboro) and junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville) both recorded one hit and one run scored. Senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) chipped in one hit for the Mavericks. Senior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J./Sussex County CC) made the start and went five innings to take the loss. Freshman Paul Hansut (Highland, N.Y. / Highland) threw four innings for the Mavericks, recording one strikeout.
Seven Knights recorded hits in the win. Rob Backus pitched eight innings to earn the win, while James McGee got three outs in the ninth to earn the save.
The Mavericks would score the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning when Murphy grounded out to second base to bring Mooradian home, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. Queens got on the board in the top of the second inning, when Joseph Pidoto grounded out to short stop, driving Karl Klesin home, tying the game 1-1.
Murphy recorded his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the third, when he singled to center field to allow Sadallah to score, giving Mercy a 2-1 lead. The Knights were then able to score two runs off of three hits in the top of the fourth, allowing them to gain a 3-2 lead.
Mercy was unable to get into a scoring positon in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the Knights back to the plate. A Mercy error would allow Klesin to reach first base, allowing Joe Morris to score the final run of the game.
Despite recording three more hits throughout the contest, Mercy was unable to overcome the deficit and eventually fell 4-2 to the Knights.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action Tuesday, April 25th when they host Bloomfield College in a non-conference matchup set for 3:00 p.m.
