Three Mavericks Record Two Hits as Softball Hosts Post

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2017) – Despite two hits from senior Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North), junior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and freshman Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix), the Mercy College softball team dropped 9-1 and 3-2 decisions to Post University on Monday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (26-12) has lost four of their last six games, while the Eagles (16-23) have won three of four.
Game 1: Post 9, Mercy 1 – 5 Innings
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Mavericks scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.
The lead did not last long as Emily Schaffer hit a three-run home run to right field that gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Lloyd began the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line, but the junior would be left stranded at second to keep the score at 3-1.
Post put the game away in the top of the fourth with six runs on three hits and two errors to take a 9-1 lead. Bullock led off the fourth for Mercy with a single but was left at second and the score remained 9-1.
The Mavericks were unable to score in the bottom of the fifth and the Eagles won via the run-rule.
Lloyd went 2-for-3, while Gross and Bullock both recorded hits. Freshman Kendall Meeks (Guysville, Ohio/Alexander) allowed three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Schaffer went 3-for-3 with five RBI for Post, while Karoline Prevost pitched five innings to earn the win.
Game 2: Post 3, Mercy 2
The nightcap saw the guests score an unearned run in the top of the first to take a 1-0. The Mavericks responded by tying the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as sophomore Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) drove in Bullock on a fielder's choice.
Post regained the lead in the top of the third on a Kayla Kresley RBI single that made it 2-1. It remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Gross singled home freshman Breanna Wheeler (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) to tie the game up at 2-2 after five innings.
After the Mavericks were held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Kristen Owens drove home Amanda Ely on a fielder's choice after Ely had reached on an error to put Post back on top 3-2.
Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Eagles the sweep.
Gross went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Bullock and Wade also recorded hits. Sophomore McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) went the distance in the circle with one earned run allowed to take the loss.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 27th when they host Bridgeport at 1 p.m.
