DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 28, 2017) – Despite an RBI from junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y./Herkimer County CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision to LIU Post in game one of a four game series on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-24, 4-13 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Pioneers (21-16, 11-6 ECC)

Mercy was led by sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), who went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored the lone Maverick run. Kiesow went 2-for-4 and recorded one RBI in the contest. Junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville) and senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) both added one hit. Senior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) made the start on the mound and went the first four innings to take the loss.

Sophomore Anthony Vaglica and freshman Zach Fritz both went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Pioneers and recorded two runs. James Varela made the start on the mound for LIU Post, throwing six innings and striking out five batters.

The Mavericks fell behind early and could not recover in game one of the four game set against the Pioneers. LIU Post plated their first run of the game in the top of the third when junior Joe Spitaleri singled to right center allowing sophomore Dave Brehm to record the first run of the contest. The Pioneers were then able to record four more runs in the top of the third inning, allowing them to gain a 5-0 lead early on.

The game remained 5-0 until the top of the fifth inning, when Fritz singled to left field to allow Vaglica to score on a fielding error. The Pioneers would record one more run for the inning when Fritz was brought home off of a sophomore Sal Geraci single to center field.

Murphy would break the Mercy silence in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Kiesow was able to blast a single to center field, advancing to second on the throw and bringing Murphy home to put the Mavericks on the board. The eighth inning came to a close with the Mavericks trailing 9-1.

The Pioneers had one last scoring run in the top of the ninth inning when they were able to score two runs off of a walk and a single from Brehm. The Mavericks were unable to record any runs in the ninth inning, eventually falling to the Pioneer 11-1.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when travel to LIU Post in an ECC doubleheader set for 12 and 3 p.m.
