Costa Tosses Complete Game as Baseball Hosts LIU Post
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2017) – Despite a complete game pitched by senior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.Y./Sussex CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (10-27, 4-16 ECC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Pioneers (24-16, 14-6 ECC) have won four games in a row.
Costa went the distance with two earned runs allowed with one strikeout to take the loss. Sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 1-for-4 and senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster CC) and junior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) went 1-for-3. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) recorded an RBI.
LIU Post was led by Anthony Vaglica who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Noah Lorenzo went the first eight innings to pick up the win. Dan Jagiello pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Vaglica tripled home Rob Andreoli who had singled in the previous at bat. Vaglica would be stranded at third as Costa induced a groundout to end the inning.
It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Mavericks scored on a fielder's choice by Mooradian to tie the game up at 1-1. Young and Fina singled in the inning and used a wild pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Mooradian then drove in Young by breaking up a potential inning-ending double play.
It was 1-1 heading to the eighth inning when Dave Brehm drove in a run on a fielder's choice to give LIU Post a 2-1 lead. The Mavericks went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings, giving the Pioneers the victory.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, May 3rd when they play at Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
