Speicher and MacSpadyen Combine for Eight Points as No. 11 Men's Lacrosse Earns 16-6 Victory Over Dominican

HILLBURN, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2017) – Powered by a combined eights points from senior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned its fifth straight win with a 16-6 victory over ECC foe Dominican College on Friday afternoon at Torne Valley Complex.

The Mavericks (9-2, 5-0 ECC) start 5-0 in ECC play for the first time in program history, while the Chargers (4-6, 1-4 ECC) have dropped four of their last five games.

Speicher had three goals and MacSpayden added four goals, one assist, two ground balls and one caused turnover for the Mavericks. Freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had four goals, an assist and two ground balls. Graduate student Kevin McNally (Hillburn, N.Y. / University at Albany) chipped in two goals and two assists for Mercy. Freshman Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland), junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y. / Nassau CC), and freshman Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) all added one goal in the victory.

Sophomore Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac) led the defense with six groundballs, while sophomore Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac) added five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Mavericks. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y. / Dowling College) made the start in net for Mercy, recording eleven saves in 45 minutes of action.

Dominican was led by Nick D'Alessandro, who scored two goals and recorded three ground balls. Marcos Pierce added a goal and an assist in the loss. Matthew Sandelier made 14 saves in the net for the Chargers.

The Mavericks opened the scoring in the first quarter with 10:47 on the clock when Martinez was able to score unassisted to get the Mavericks offense going. Just one minute later McPartland added his first goal of the game. McNally was able to score the third and final goal of the quarter after a Dominican turnover to put Mercy back in possession. The first quarter ended with the Mavericks holding a 3-0 lead.

Mercy entered the second quarter looking to make a statement and they would do just that as they opened quarter with four unanswered goals. The first two goals of the quarter came from two successful face-offs from Rey, setting the Mavericks up for a scoring opportunity. Cortese and McPartland both netted goals to improve the Mavericks lead to 7-0 with 4:33 left in the second quarter. Kevin Mayer answered with a goal at the 4:26 mark to make it 7-1. McPartland and MacSpayden would both record goals in the remainder of the quarter to put the Mavericks up 9-1 at halftime.

MacSpayden netted two more quick goals for Mercy within the first two minutes of play in the third quarter to improve the score to 11-1. D'Alessandro added one goal for the Chargers with 9:58 on the clock to put Dominican back on the board. However, Speicher would finish off the quarter with a goal to give Mercy a 12-2 lead after three quarters.

The Chargers were able to score four of their six goals in the final quarter of play, but it was not enough as the Mavericks eventually took the 16-6 victory.

Mercy held a 41-36 edge in shots and a 33-23 advantage in groundballs. The Mavericks won 14-of-26 face-offs and were 13-of-18 on clear attempts.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday afternoon when they host LIU Post in an ECC matchup set for 4:00 p.m.
