Seven Different Mavericks Record Multiple Goals as No. 12/17 Women's Lacrosse Earns 19-2 Victory Over UDC
Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr. 9, 2017) – Powered by seven different Mavericks recording multiple goals, the No. 12/17 Mercy College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-2 victory over the University of the District of Columbia in ECC action on Sunday night at Catholic University.
The Mavericks (11-1, 3-1 ECC) have won two games in a row, while the Firebirds (1-7, 0-5 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.
Leading Mercy was sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) who had five points, including the 100th of her career, on three goals and two assists along with eight draw controls. Junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) contributed three goals and two assists, while senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) produced two goals and four assists. Graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) added three goals and an assist and freshman Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) netted three goals and three caused turnovers. Freshman Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) scored two goals with an assist and junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) dished out three assists. Sophomore Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) recorded two goals and freshman Samantha Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) posted a goal and an assist. Sophomore Talia Stagnitta (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) led the defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) played the first half in net and made two saves to earn the win.
UDC received goals from Kianna Franklin and Aaliyah Carter, while goalie Jada Foy made seven saves.
Mercy looked to build off their win from Friday and got on the board just over a minute in as Davidson scored, off an assist from Jehle, to put the Mavericks ahead 1-0. Isnardi found the back of the net for her 100th career point just 37 seconds later to increase the Mercy lead to 2-0.
The Mavericks held a 7-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest as Isnardi scored two more goals and Sanchez, Haines and Sergio netted their first goals of the game to give Mercy a commanding lead. The Mavericks went on to score four more goals in the half to take an 11-0 lead at halftime. Haines, Sergio, Spinazzola and Sanchez all picked up goals to put the game out of reach after the first half.
Haines and Sergio opened the scoring in the second half to put the Mavericks ahead 13-0 with 24:30 remaining. Carter ended the scoring drought for the Firebirds with their first goal at the 19:51 mark to bring the score to 13-1.
Spinazzola and DiFusco answered with a pair of goals to give Mercy a 15-1 advantage before Franklin scored the final UDC goal of the night with 7:28 remaining. The Mavericks ended the contest with four straight goals to secure the convincing victory on the road. Davidson scored twice and Shelton and DiFusco added goals to conclude the scoring.
Mercy held a 30-6 edge in shots, a 19-12 advantage in ground balls and a 15-8 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Philadelphia University at 3 p.m.
