DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2017) – Powered by goals from junior Corinna Ferrante(Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and sophomore Jessica Brandt (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom), the Mercy College women's soccer team defeated ECC foe Queens College, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks improve to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Knights fall to 1-7-2 and are 0-3-1 in the East Coast Conference.
Ferrante led the Mavericks with one goal, three shots and one shot on goal. Brandt recorded one goal, two shots, and one shot on goal. Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif. / Los Altos) chipped in with one assist and fired off two shots. Senior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made the start in the net and made one saves in 45 minutes to earn the win. Freshman Melissa Torres(La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played the second half in goal and made two saves.
Erin Vernillo Taylor Bonanno and Guro Eriksen all recorded one shot on goal in the contest. Nicole Cranny saw a full 90 minutes of action in the net and had ten saves to take the loss.
The Mavericks controlled the first half of the contest, as they were able to fire off 13 shots in the 45 minutes of play. The game remained scoreless for a majority of the first half. Ferrante found the back of the net off a rebound from Elizarraras with three minutes to go in the first half to put the Mavericks on the board. Erin Verillo was able to keep the Queens College offense in the game, as she recorded the only Knights shot in the first half. The Mavericks entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Mercy wasted little time in the second half, as Brandt was able to place the ball in the top of the box after a deflection to score the final goal of the contest. Despite taking four shots on goal in the second half, the Knights were unable to find the back of the net and eventually fell 2-0 to the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 21-5 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 4th when they face University of Bridgeport in an ECC matchup at 6 p.m.
