ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2018) – Despite a goal from junior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University), the No. 8 Mercy College men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (8-2-1, 5-2 ECC) see their four-game winning streak come to an end, while the Redhawks (4-7-3, 1-5-1 ECC) pick up their first ECC win.
Mangada now has a team-high six goals on the year and senior Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia/American International College) dished out an assist. Sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made four saves to take the loss.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Dylan Ruiz who scored twice and by Aaryn Massy who also scored. Ben Hastings made four saves to earn the win.
The teams traded shots on goal in the 10th and 18th minutes before the Redhawks got on the board in the 30th minute. Ruiz fired a shot from outside the box from the left side that found the back of the net to put Roberts Wesleyan up 1-0.
Williams made another save in the 40th minute to keep the game at 1-0 and the teams headed into halftime with the hosts up 1-0.
The Redhawks added onto their lead in the 55th minute when Ruiz scored on a shot from the right hand side to give Roberts Wesleyan a 2-0 advantage.
The hosts increased their lead to 3-0 in the 60th minute when Massy headed ball into the net after a cross from Terrell Spencer. Mercy continued to battle and would make it 3-1 in the 64th minute when Mangada headed the ball into the net following a cross from Alvarez. However, the Mavericks would not be able to score again and the Redhawks came away with the win.
Mercy held a 14-10 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 20th when they host NYIT at 3 p.m.
