Noble Scores as No. 2 Women's Soccer Hosts No. 3 LIU Post in ECC Championship Semifinal

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2018) – Despite a goal from senior Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance), the No. 2 seeded Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision to No. 3 seeded LIU Post in an ECC Championship Semifinal matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (12-3-1) fail to advance to the Championship Game after winning the ECC Championship last year, while the Pioneers (13-2-3) advance to the Championship Game for the third straight year.

Noble recorded her team-leading 12th goal of the year and junior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) dished out her fifth assist of the year. Sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made six saves to take the loss.

LIU Post was led by Julia Duffy and Erin O'Connor who scored. O'Connor and Kendra Oldroyd added assists and goalkeeper Hillevi Eklow made three saves to earn the win.

The Pioneers had the first scoring opportunity in the 7th minute when a Duffy shot was stopped by Torres. In the 12th minute senior RaeAnn Ioannou (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) hit the crossbar and Gabrielle Clark hit the crossbar for LIU Post in the 18th minute. Torres made another stop in the 23rd minute and Eklow made saves in the 23rd and 24th minutes to keep the game scoreless.

The Mavericks finally broke through in the 27th minute when Noble tapped in a Brandt corner kick into the right side of the net to make it 1-0. Torres made one more stop in the half and the teams headed into halftime with Mercy up 1-0.

After a scoreless first eight minutes of the half, the Pioneers tied the game up at 1-1 in the 54th minute when O'Connor sent a thru ball from the right side of the field all the way to the left and found Duffy who put it away to tie the contest up.

Torres made another save in the 75th minute and freshman Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) hit the post on a shot for Mercy in the 82nd. Ioannou forced Eklow to make a final stop in the 87th minute and neither team could score in the final three minutes, sending the game into overtime.

The first overtime period saw neither team record a shot and the teams headed into a second overtime for the second time this season. LIU Post recorded the first shot on goal in the 104th minute, but Torres was up to the challenge and made the stop. The Pioneers would finally breakthrough in the 106th minute when Oldroyd sent a cross to O'Connor in front of the goal and O'Connor sent it into the net to give LIU Post a 2-1 win.

LIU Post held a 12-9 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks will now await a possible NCAA Tournament appearance.
