Williams Makes Four Saves as No. 3 Men's Soccer Plays at No. 2 LIU Post in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2018) – Despite four saves from sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College), the No. 3 seeded Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 2 seeded LIU Post in the Second Round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park.

The Mavericks (13-4-1) see their best season since 1989 come to an end. Mercy made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1989 and won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1989, earning a national ranking throughout the season. The Pioneers (14-4-1) will face the winner of Adelphi/Wilmington in the East Region Final next week.

Senior Mariglen Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and juniors Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino) and Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) all recorded a shot on goal. Williams made a game-high four saves in taking the loss.

LIU Post was led by Paul Hein who scored and by Vittorio Argeri who dished out an assist. Oliver Hessner Hansen made three saves to earn the win.

Williams made his initial save of the day in the 3rd minute on a Vittorio shot. Rozenblum followed with a good chance for Mercy in the 11th minute, but Hessner Hansen made the stop to keep the game scoreless. Williams made two saves to keep the Pioneers off the board and the teams headed into halftime tied at 0-0 with LIU Post holding a 4-2 edge in shots.

The second half saw the Mavericks have scoring chances in the 56th and 71st minutes on Verjoni and Achondo shots, but Hessner Hansen made two more saves to keep Mercy off the board. The Pioneers got on the board in the 79th minute when Hein headed the ball into the net after a free kick from Vittorio, following a Mercy foul right outside the box, which made it 1-0.

The Mavericks would look for the equalizer but were unable to score and the Pioneers came away with the win, ending Mercy's historic 2018 season.

Shots were tied at 8-8 and LIU Post held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
