Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Plays at Dominican

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Nov. 17, 2018) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered an 88-65 setback to Dominican College on Saturday night at the 7th Annual Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament.

The Mavericks (0-3) have dropped three games in a row, while the Chargers (2-1) move over .500 on the year.

Redshirt sophomore Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) led the way with a double-double by way of 13 points and ten rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting. Graduate student Tawayne Anderson Jr. (Freeport, N.Y./Merrimack College) recorded 12 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Matthew Alectus (Hollywood, Fla./Hallandale) produced 12 points. Senior Sal Barbetto (New City, N.Y./Rockland CC) poured in eight points and dished out a team-high three assists.

Dominican was led by Tavon Ginyard and Jason Copman who both had a game-high 19 points.

The Chargers opened the contest with the game's first four points and held a 6-5 lead at the 16:57 mark. Mercy responded with a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 19-10, with 12:16 on the clock following a Griffin three-pointer.

The hosts regrouped and followed with a 17-0 run over the next six minutes to take the lead back at 27-19 with six minutes left in the opening half. The Chargers later increased the lead to 13, 43-30, and headed into halftime with a 45-34 lead.

The Mavericks came out of the locker rooms strong once again, starting the second half on an 8-0 run, capped off by a pair of Dondre Barnes (Atlanta, Ga./South Atlanta) free throws, which made it 45-42 with 17:12 remaining. Dominican answered right back with three straight points before Barbetto drained a layup to make it 48-44 with 15:42 left.

The Chargers then went on a 9-0 run to put the lead back to 13, 57-44, with 11:51 left to play. Alectus made it a ten-point game, 59-49, with ten minutes left following two free throws. Dominican bounced back with a 12-2 run to build a 71-51 lead with 6:25 remaining and held a double-digit point lead the rest of the way to secure the win.

Mercy shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from downtown and 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from the foul line. Dominican shot 53.1 percent (34-of-64) from the field, 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from beyond the arc and 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the charity stripe. Dominican held a 45-33 edge in the glass, which they turned into an 18-6 edge in second chance points. The Chargers also held a 50-26 advantage in paint points and a 54-18 edge in bench points. Mercy held a 20-16 margin in points off turnovers.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play Post at Dominican at 3 p.m.
