DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2018) – Despite three different Mavericks recording a shot on goal, the No. 1 seeded Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 2 seeded LIU Post in the ECC Men's Soccer Championship Final on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (12-3-1) see their four-game winning streak come to an end, while the Pioneers (13-4-1) have won four straight ECC Championships.
Senior Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia/American International College) and juniors Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino) recorded shots on goal and sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made three saves to take the loss.
LIU Post was led by Lukas Ostermann and Vittorio Argeri who recorded goals and Atha Coutroumpas added an assist. Goalkeeper Oliver Hessner Hansen made three saves and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Both teams had limited scoring opportunities in the first half with Williams making two saves to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half saw Achondo hit the crossbar in the 54th minute following an LIU Post foul right outside the box. Ostermann would get the Pioneers on the board in the 57th minute when Coutroumpas sent a thru ball to Ostermann who fired the ball into the lower left corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Hessner Hansen made three saves in the second half to keep the Mavericks off the board and Vittorio gave LIU Post a 2-0 lead in the 83rd minute when he scored off a free kick.
Mercy was unable to get on the board and the Pioneers came away with the win to secure the ECC Championship.
Mercy held a 12-8 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks will now await a possible NCAA Tournament berth. The selection show is Monday, November 5th at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com.
