BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 2018) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 102-51 decision to Division I St. Francis Brooklyn in an exhibition contest on Tuesday night at the Pope Physical Education Center.
The contest does not count against Mercy's record. The Terriers (1-0) open their season with a win for the first time since 2013-14.
Sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) led the Mavericks with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) and freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) netted ten points and Hall had a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) contributed nine points.
St. Francis was led by Jade Johnson who had a game-high 19 points.
Mercy took a 2-0 lead on a Bender layup just 15 seconds into the first quarter. The Terriers responded with a 16-2 run to take the lead for good at 16-4 with 6:48 left in the opening quarter. The Mavericks cut the deficit to five, 22-17, on an Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) three-point play with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. St. Francis Brooklyn ended the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 34-17 lead after one quarter.
The Terriers outscored the Mavericks 25-8 in the second quarter to take a 59-25 lead at halftime.
The Mavericks held their own in the third quarter as they were outscored just 18-14 in the period. St. Francis Brooklyn held a 25-12 edge in the fourth quarter to pull away from Mercy and earn the victory in their season opener. .
Mercy shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the floor, 19.0 percent (4-of-21) from downtown and 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from the foul line. St. Francis Brooklyn shot 48.1 percent (39-of-81) from the floor, 50.0 percent (14-of-28) from beyond the arc and 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the foul line. The Terriers held a 57-29 edge on the boards and a 25-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks will open up their 2018-19 season on Friday, November 9th when they face Saint Michael's College at St. Thomas Aquinas College at 7 p.m.
