DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 29, 2018) – Despite a team-high 13 points from sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 82-41 decision to Southern New Hampshire University in their 2018 finale on Saturday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (3-9) have dropped six games in a row, while the Penmen (8-4) have won two games in a row.
Brown added six rebounds and two steals and freshman Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) recorded nine points and four rebounds. Junior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) poured in six points and had a game-high-tying nine rebounds along with two blocks and four steals.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Kylie Lorenzen who had a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds.
The visitors opened the game on a 9-2 run before a Collier layup made it 9-4 with 6:38 left in the opening quarter. The Penmen responded with a 7-0 run to build a 16-4 lead and headed into the second quarter up, 18-8.
Southern New Hampshire outscored the Mavericks 20-8 in the second quarter to take a 38-16 lead at halftime.
The Penmen came out strong in the third quarter and scored the period's first 24 points to put their lead to 62-16 with 1:39 remaining in the quarter. A Lake layup got the Mavericks on the board at the 1:15 mark and Southern New Hampshire ended the frame with six straight points to take a 68-18 lead after three quarters.
Mercy continued to battle in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Penmen 23-14 in the frame with Brown recording all 13 of her points in the period. However, it was not enough and Southern New Hampshire came away with the win.
Mercy shot 18.8 percent (12-of-64) from the floor, 10.0 percent (2-of-20) from downtown and 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the foul line. Southern New Hampshire shot 47.1 percent (32-of-68) from the field, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from beyond the arc and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the charity stripe. The Penmen held a 58-33 edge on the boards and held a 30-6 edge in points off turnovers.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, January 2nd when they host Merrimack at 5 p.m.
