NYACK, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2018) – Powered by a game-high 20 points from senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) on Senior Night, the Mercy College women's basketball team earned an 83-56 win over The College of New Rochelle on Wednesday night at Bowman Gymnasium.
In a ceremony prior to the contest seniors Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard), Clark and student assistant coach Brittany Murray were recognized for their contributions to the Mercy College women's basketball program.
The Mavericks (7-18) snap an eight-game losing streak with the win, while the Blue Angels (9-13) have dropped two games in a row.
Clark added nine rebounds and went 6-of-14 from the floor, while Keane-Dawes added 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) contributed 14 points and seven rebounds and Sullivan ended the night with eight points and ten rebounds.
New Rochelle was led by Aaliyah Fields who had a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
The Blue Angels jumped out to an early 4-2 lead before the Mavericks answered with a 7-2 run to take a 9-6 advantage with 6:19 on the clock in the first quarter. New Rochelle cut the deficit to one, 9-8, but Mercy would end the quarter on a 7-3 run to take a 16-11 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter saw the Mavericks open the frame on an 8-2 run to increase the lead to 11, 24-13, with six minutes left in the half. A Fields trifecta cut the Mercy lead to ten, but the Mavericks would conclude the half with five straight points from Keane-Dawes to give themselves a 38-23 lead at halftime.
Mercy took control of the game in the third quarter when they began the period on a 17-8 run to increase their margin to 24, 55-31, with four minutes remaining in the third. The Mavericks increased the lead to 25, 62-37, and would head into the final quarter up, 64-42.
Mercy continued to dominate the game in the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to as much as 30 in securing the Senior Night win.
The Mavericks shot 34.2 percent (26-of-76) from the floor, 30.6 percent (15-of-49) from downtown and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the foul line. The Blue Angels shot 30.1 percent (22-of-73) from the field, 29.4 percent (10-of-34) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from the charity stripe. The 15 made three pointers and 49 three-point attempts are both season highs for the Mavericks, while the 83 points scored is a season high.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 17th when they play at Bridgeport at 1 p.m.
