Gibbons Records 15 Saves as No. 15/17 Men's Lacrosse Earns 10-5 Win Over Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2018) – Powered by a game-high 15 saves from junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College), the No. 15/17 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned their third straight win with a 10-5 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (3-1) have won three straight games, while the Golden Knights (0-2) remain winless on the year.

Gibbons made 15 saves with just five goals allowed to pick up the win. Freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had two goals and an assist and senior Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) added two goals. Senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) and Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) both contributed a goal and an assist. Juniors Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) and Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC), sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshman Sean Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) also scored. Sophomore Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) dished out an assist and sophomore Kyle Gardner (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a team-high five ground balls. Junior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and sophomore Bobby Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a team-high two caused turnovers and sophomore Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 9-of-18 on faceoffs.

Saint Rose was led by Carter Badour who had a game-high three goals along with six ground balls.

Mercy continued their strong start to games beginning the contest with the game's first five goals. Marzocca got the Mavericks on the board at the 11:18 mark to make it 1-0. MacSpadyen got into the scoring column with 5:39 remaining in the quarter with a man-up goal off a pass from Cortese that made it 2-0. Martinez and McPartland concluded the scoring in the quarter to put Mercy up 4-0 after one quarter.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the second quarter as Mercy went into halftime up 4-0.

Scorcia opened the scoring in the third quarter less than a minute in to give the Mavericks a 5-0 edge. Badour tallied his goal of the game to bring Saint Rose to within 5-1 at the 11:35 mark. McDonough responded with a goal just over a minute later to put Mercy ahead 6-1. The Golden Knights followed with two unanswered goals to trim the deficit to 6-3. Stockton closed the scoring in the period with his first collegiate goal to send the Mavericks to the fourth quarter up 7-3.

Saint Rose began the scoring in the fourth quarter to get within three, 7-4, but Mercy would put the game away with three of the game's final four goals to seal the win. Chillianis, McDonough and Scorcia all scored to put the finishing touches on the win.

Mercy held a 42-25 edge in shots, a 30-29 edge in ground balls and went 9-of-18 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 3rd against Chestnut Hill at Mercy Field at 2 p.m.
