CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2018) – Powered by a home run and a game-high three RBI from sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix), the Mercy College softball team earned a 10-2 victory over Jefferson University on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (6-3) have won three games in a row, while the Rams (2-4) have dropped two games in a row.
Bullock went 2-for-3 with three RBI and senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) batted 2-for-2 with two RBI and junior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) and junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) ealso recorded a hit and an RBI. Sophomore Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas/Allen) went the first four innings with one earned run allowed to pick up the win.
Jefferson was led by Stephanie Pepper who went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Emily Bradley went the distance in the circle and allowed nine earned runs to take the loss.
Mercy wasted little time in getting on the board in the top of the first as Wootten drove home freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) to put the Mavericks up 1-0. Jefferson quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.
It remained 2-1 until the top of the third inning when Mercy scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Dunlop recorded a two-run double and Newham singled home a run to finish off the scoring in the inning.
The Mavericks continued to swing the bats well in the fourth inning when Bullock smacked a two-run home run to put Mercy ahead 6-2. Mercy concluded their scoring with four runs in the top of the fifth to build a 10-2 advantage. Lemus recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice to begin the inning. Stevens went on to record an RBI single and Bullock brought home the final run of the day with a double to score Stevens. Senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) kept the Rams off the board in the bottom of the fifth to give Mercy the win via the run rule.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face St. Michael's and Southern N.H. starting at 11:30 a.m. in Clermont, Florida.
