DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2018) – Powered by a team-high six hits on the day from junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) and a complete-game shutout in game two from junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC), the Mercy College softball team dropped an 8-5 decision in nine innings in game one before taking a 5-0 decision in game two against the College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (10-5) have won seven of their last nine games, while the Golden Knights (5-9) have won three of their last four games.
Game 1: Saint Rose 8, Mercy 5
The Golden Knights opened the scoring in game one with a home run to right field off the bat of Briana Bowen to give Saint Rose a 1-0 lead.
It remained 1-0 until the seventh inning when senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) drove in Dunlop with a single through the left side to tie the game up at 1-1. The Mavericks had runners on second and third with one out looking to win the game in the seventh inning, but a popup and groundout would end the threat sending the game into extra innings.
Saint Rose took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a Taylor Solomon two-RBI single to center field. The Mavericks responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to tie the game up again at 3-3. Dunlop singled home a run and freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) tied the game with a single to the pitcher that scored senior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme). Dunlop was on third base with two outs but a line out to shortstop ended the inning sending the game to the ninth inning.
The Golden Knights put together five runs in the top of the ninth to build an 8-3 lead. The biggest blow of the inning was the grand slam off the bat of Astasia Myler that concluded the scoring for Saint Rose. The Mavericks plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth as junior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) singled home a run and Lloyd brought in another run on a fielder's choice. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome and Saint Rose earned the game one win.
Dunlop went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Stevens went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Mueller batted 1-for-4 with an RBI and Lloyd went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) went 2-for-4 and took the loss in the circle with 1.1 innings pitched. Stevens went 7 2/3 innings with three earned runs allowed to earn the no-decision.
Saint Rose was led by Myler who went 1-for-5 with four RBI. Thalia Santiago earned the win for Saint Rose with eight innings pitched and four earned runs allowed.
Game 2: Mercy 5, Saint Rose 0
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Lemus recorded an RBI groundout that plated junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College), who led off the inning with a single. Mercy tacked on another run in the second inning when Dunlop drove in another run with a single down the left field line that scored senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) to make it 2-0.
After another scoreless inning from Jameson, the Mavericks scored two more runs in the third inning when Stevens smacked an RBI single to right field and freshman Bailee Nunes (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) scored after a Saint Rose error.
Mercy scored their final run of the game in the fifth inning when Newham brought home Jameson on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0. That would be more than enough for Jameson who went the distance with four strikeouts and no runs allowed to pick up her third win as a Maverick.
Dunlop went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Newham went 1-for-4 with an RBI, Lemus went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Stevens went 1-for-3 with an RBI. McCormick and Mueller both recorded two hits.
Saint Rose was led by Dana Nicoletti and Taylor Solomon who both had two hits.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 31st when they play at Queens at 12 p.m.
