Lemus Records Team-High Two RBI as Softball Hosts Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2018) – Despite two RBI in game two from senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC), the Mercy College softball team dropped 5-0 and 5-2 decisions to ECC foe Molloy College on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field.

The Mavericks (14-13, 4-8 ECC) have dropped three of their last four games, while the Lions (22-14, 10-4 ECC) sweep the season series.

Game 1: Molloy 5, Mercy 0

The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Kaitlyn Snyder led off the game with a home run to left field that gave Molloy the early lead.

Molloy tacked on three more runs in the top of the third to build a 4-0 lead. Brianna Dalton hit a three-run home run in the inning down the left field line that gave the Lions some insurance runs. Senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) recorded the first Mercy hit in the fourth inning with a double to right center. Lemus followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. However, a lineout to right field would end the threat and the inning.

Molloy added another run in the top of the sixth on a Sarah Rambo RBI single to make it 5-0. Mercy would only be able to put together three hits in the contest and could not get on the board, giving the Lions the game one win.

Wootten and senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) went 1-for-2 and freshman Hannah Mueller went 1-for-3. Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) went the distance with five runs allowed and eight strikeouts to take the loss.

Dalton led Molloy with a 1-for-4 game with three RBI and Jenna Turato earned the win with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2: Molloy 5, Mercy 2

The nightcap remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Mavericks scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) singled to lead off the inning, Wootten walked and junior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) singled to load up the bases. After a pitching change, Lemus came up and singled home Wootten and Bullock to put Mercy on the board. The Mavericks were unable to plate any more runs as Turato worked her way out of trouble.

The Lions took the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs, building a 3-2 advantage. Olivia Banulski hit a two-run triple that tied the score and Courtney Greene singled home the final run of the inning.

Molloy would tack on two unearned runs in the top of the sixth to build a 5-2 lead and the Mavericks could not score any more runs.

Lemus went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Bullock went 2-for-4 with a run. Stevens went 2-for-3 and junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) and McCormick also recorded hits. Junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) pitched five innings with three runs allowed to take the loss.

Banulski went 1-for-3 with two RBI for Molloy and Turato pitched four scoreless innings of relief to pick up her second win of the day.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 14th when they host Queens at 12 p.m.
