WATERBURY, Conn. (Apr. 23, 2018) – Powered by a team-high four RBI on the day from senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC), the Mercy College softball team earned 5-3 and 13-0 victories over Post University on Monday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
The Mavericks (25-14) have won 11 of their last 12 games, while the Eagles (17-21) have dropped three games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 5, Post 3
Mercy scored all five of their runs in the first inning on six hits and a Post error to take a 5-0 lead. Lemus started the scoring with a two-run single through the left side that brought home freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) and junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College). Senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) plated two more runs in the inning on a double to center field that made it 4-0. McCormick scored the final run of the inning on an error by the Post center fielder to make it 5-0.
The Eagles scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to make it 5-3, but sophomore Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas/Allen) would pitch four scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
Lemus went 3-for-4 with two RBI and McCormick went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Carmichael went the final four inning with one hit allowed to pick up her second win.
Avery Kelly went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for Post and Leslie Denis allowed four earned runs without recording an out to take the loss.
Game 2: Mercy 13, Post 0 – 5 Innings
After a scoreless first inning, the Mavericks scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) brought home the first run on a single to third base that made it 1-0. Senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) then scored on a passed ball to increase the score to 2-0 before Newham drove in the third run of the inning on a single to the catcher. Lemus concluded the scoring in the inning with a two-run double to right field that made it 5-0.
Junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) gave the Mavericks two more runs in the third inning when she singled up the middle to make it 7-0.
The Mavericks tacked on six more runs in the fourth inning to build a 13-0 lead. McCormick recorded an RBI on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and Wootten brought in the second run when she reached on an error by the first baseman. Bullock later delivered a two-run double to center field and sophomore Jessica Lombardi (Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) plated the fifth run when she grounded out to second to score Wootten. Dunlop finished off the scoring with a single to center field that score Bullock, making it 13-0.
Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) and senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) combined to allow just one Post hit to give Mercy the game two win.
Bullock went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Dunlop went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Lemus went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Wootten went 1-for-2 with an RBI. McCormick went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Newham went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jameson went four inning with one hit allowed to pick up her tenth win of the year.
Cassidy Petrie went 1-for-2 for Post and Brianna Koref pitched two innings with five runs allowed to take the loss.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 26th when they host NYIT at 2:30 p.m.
