DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2018) – Powered by a combined 13 points from seniors Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) and Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) on Senior Day, the No. 10 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 20-7 victory over the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game seniors Olivia Kelly (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Rachel Gumowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), Jehle, Davidson, Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) and Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) were recognized.
The Mavericks (13-2, 7-1 ECC) have won three games in a row, while the Purple Knights (6-9, 3-5 ECC) have dropped three of their last four games.
Jehle had a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists and Davidson finished with a game-high five goals along with an assist. Junior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) netted three goals and ten draw controls and sophomore Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Erin Dingman (Watertown, N.Y./Onondaga CC) and freshman Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) both scored twice and sophomores Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, and junior Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) also scored. Junior Talia Stagnitta (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) dished out an assist and had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Coticchio caused two turnovers and freshman Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) played the first half in goal with three saves to pick up the win. Judson made two saves in playing the second half.
Bridgeport was led by Shyla Murray who had a team-high three goals and Cheyanne Gangel made ten saves to take the loss.
Jehle got the Mavericks on the board less than two minutes in and Mackie scored her lone goal of the game at the 23:44 mark to make it 2-0. Davidson then netted back-to-back goals to bring the score to 4-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the half. Sanchez and Isnardi recorded back-to-back goals to increase the Mavericks lead to 6-0 with 19 minutes left in the half.
Davidson, Shimborske and Jehle scored three more goals to give Mercy a 9-0 lead with 13:18 left in the opening half. Murray scored the first Bridgeport goal at the 12:51 mark to make it 9-1. However, the Mavericks would close out the half with seven straight goals to take a 16-1 lead at halftime. Isnardi scored twice and Sergio, Davidson, Spinazzola, Jehle and Dingman closed out the half with goals.
Sanchez opened the scoring in the second half to put the Mercy lead at 17-1. The Purple Knights responded with three straight goals to get within 17-4 with 16:31 remaining. Davidson ended the Bridgeport run with her fifth goal of the day to make it 18-4. An Ariana Weingrad goal made it 18-5 before Dingman came back with her second of the game to bring the score to 19-5 with 11 minutes left.
Bridgeport ensued with two more goals to get within 19-7, but Shimborske closed out the scoring with her second on the day to put the finishing touches on a Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 37-15 edge in shots, a 13-9 advantage in ground balls and a 19-9 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 28th when they close out the regular season at No. 1/2 Adelphi at 4 p.m.
