DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2018) – Powered by 5.2 scoreless innings from junior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) in the circle and a home run at the plate, the Mercy College softball team concluded their regular season with 10-2 and 13-0 victories over Bloomfield College on Monday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (30-15) are 16-2 in their last 18 games, while the Bears (11-23) have dropped six games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 10, Bloomfield 2
After a scoreless first inning, the Mavericks took control with eight runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. Senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) started the scoring with a two-run single to right field. Junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) later delivered a two-run double to right center that made it 4-0. Junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) followed with another two-run single to increase the lead to 6-0. Senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) delivered the final blow of the inning with double to left center that scored two more runs to make it 8-0.
Mercy added on a run in the third inning when Dunlop recorded an RBI single to left field that brought home senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) to bring the score to 9-0. The Bears scored two runs in the top of the fourth but the Mavericks responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-2 lead. Lemus scored the run in the inning on a steal of home after leading off the inning with a double.
Bloomfield was unable to score in the fifth inning giving the Mavericks the win.
Newham went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Lemus went 2-for-3 with two RBI. McCormick went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Dunlop went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Wootten went 2-for-3 with two runs and senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) went 2-for-3. Junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) went the first 3.1 innings to earn the win and Stevens pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
Bloomfield was led by Alexis Freudenberg who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Maddie Feddersen went the distance in the circle to take the loss.
Game 2: Mercy 13, Bloomfield 0
The nightcap saw the Mavericks take a 7-0 lead with seven runs in the second inning. Stevens scored the first run on a wild pitch and Wootten followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) recorded another sacrifice fly to bring the score to 3-0 and Newham doubled home another run to increase the lead to 4-0. Lemus drove home two more runs on a double that made it 6-0 and Stevens brought home the final run on a single to left field.
Mercy added three more runs in the third inning to build a 10-0 lead. Dunlop recorded a sacrifice fly and freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) singled home a run with another scoring on an error.
The Mavericks scored their final three runs in the fourth inning when Stevens hit a lead-off home run and Bullock hit a two-run homer. The combination of Stevens and sophomore Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas/Allen) allowed just two hits to post the shutout.
Newham went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Mueller went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lemus went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Stevens went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Wootten went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Bullock went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Stevens pitched 4.0 innings to pick up the win.
Morgan Laughlin went 1-for-2 for Bloomfield and Lauren Booth went the distance to take the loss.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, May 2nd when they host Molloy at 12 p.m. on the first day of the ECC Championship.
