Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mangada Scores Game-Winning Goal in Overtime to Give No. 22 Men's Soccer a 1-0 Victory Over Assumption

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning goal with 38 seconds left in the first overtime from junior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University), the No. 22 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-0) open their season with three straight wins for the first time since 2013, while the Greyhounds (2-1) suffer their first loss of the season.

Mangada scored his team-leading third goal of the year and junior Jose Izarra (Valencia, Venezuela/Marshalltown CC) dished out his team-leading third assist of the year. Sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made four saves to earn his third win of the season.

Assumption was led by Kevin Hernandez who had two shots on goal. Sebastian Jimenez made six saves to take the loss.

The opening half saw the Mavericks come out firing, recording four corner kicks in the first five minutes of action and forcing Jimenez to make a save in the 2nd minute of action.

Senior Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia/American International College) recorded a shot on goal in the 12th minute and Mangada produced a shot on goal of his own in the 29th minute, but both were stopped by Jimenez to keep the game scoreless.

Williams made a pair of key saves at the end of the half too keep it 0-0. Redshirt freshman Ryan Sipavicius (Flushing, N.Y./Holy Cross) fired the last shot on goal with 18 seconds left in the half, but was unable to find the back of the net, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.

The two teams traded scoring opportunities to begin the second half and Williams made another stop in the 64th minute to keep it a 0-0 game. The Mavericks had several scoring opportunities throughout regulation but were unable to capitalize and Mercy's backline kept Assumption off the board so overtime would be needed.

The overtime period saw Mercy come out with the first two shots and two corner kicks. With less than one minute remaining in the first overtime period, Izarra would feed Mangada a cross from right to left and Mangada would beat Jimenez one-on-one to give the Mavericks the 1-0 overtime victory.

Mercy held a 21-8 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 12th when they play at Jefferson at 4 p.m.
