DeBose Records Match-High 15 Kills as Volleyball Earns Straight-Set Win Over Queens

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2019) – Powered by a match-high 15 kills from senior Imani DeBose (Carson, Calif./The College of New Rochelle), the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-11) victory over ECC foe Queens College in a Making Strides Versus Cancer and Dig Pink match on Wednesday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (8-13, 2-3 ECC) snap a three-match losing streak, while the Knights (1-13, 0-5 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.

DeBose had a match-high 15 kills and sophomore Loreto Nunez Casal (Pontevedra, Spain/Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) had 12 kills. Senior Jessica Berka (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic) had a match-high ten digs and junior Natalia Garcia (Vega Baja, P.R./Turabo University) had a match-high 31 assists. Senior NeKendra Liddie (Gardena, Calif./The College of New Rochelle) had six kills and two blocks and junior Adriana Lopez-Soto (Gurabo, P.R./Notre Dame HS) had eight digs.

Queens was led by Lauren Kehoe who had a team-high ten kills.

Mercy took an early 3-1 lead in set one before the Knights battled back and tied the set up at 6-6. The Mavericks answered with a 5-0 run to take an 11-6 lead before Queens scored two straight points to make it 11-8. Mercy followed with a 10-2 run, capped off by a Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) kill, which gave the Mavericks a 21-10 lead. Mercy led the rest of the way to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Queens jumped out to a 3-1 lead in set two and later held an 11-9 lead. Mercy clawed their way back and tied the set at 16-16 before rattling off three straight points to take a 19-16 lead. Queens made it 19-18, but the Mavericks finished off the set on a 6-1 run to take the second set, 25-19.

The Knights made it 6-4 in favor of Mercy in the third set before the Mavericks went on a 9-1 run to build a 15-5 lead after a DeBose kill. Mercy later built the lead to 21-7 after a Garcia ace and cruised the rest of the way to secure the set and match.

Mercy hit .286 with 44 kills and 40 digs and Queens hit 105 with 25 kills and 33 digs.

Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 19th when they host Southern N.H. and Wilmington starting at 11 a.m.
