DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2019) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 98-80 decision to Felician University on Wednesday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (0-3) drop their third straight game, while the Golden Falcons (2-1) have won two games in a row.
Redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) led the way with a team-high 22 points and 14 rebounds on 9-of-17 shooting. Junior Nakeem Hamilton (Bronx, N.Y./Hostos CC) had 17 points and six rebounds and junior Matthew Alectus (Hollywood, Fla./Hallandale) had 12 points. Sophomore Dondre Barnes (Atlanta, Ga./South Atlanta) had 11 points and junior Dayvon Cuffey (Baltimore, Md./Anne Arundel CC) had seven points and 12 rebounds.
Felician was led by Zamir Wright who had a game-high 29 points.
Mercy took an early 4-3 lead following a Hamilton free throw. The Golden Falcons answered with a 10-4 run to take a 13-8 lead at the 14:57 mark of the first half. The Mavericks later cut the deficit to one, 17-16, after a Griffin dunk with 13:19 left in the opening half.
Felician later built the lead back up to seven, but Mercy quickly ensued with five straight points to cut the Golden Falcon lead to two, 23-21, with 10:40 left in the first half. Felician came back on a 23-3 run to take their largest lead of the half, 46-24, with 5:25 on the clock.
Mercy continued to battle and cut the deficit to 12, 49-37, following an Alectus layup. However, Felician scored the half's final four points to head into halftime up, 53-37.
Felician opened the half by taking their largest lead of the game, 68-45, with 15:50 remaining. The Mavericks chipped away and went on an 18-3 run, capped off by a Griffin layup, which made it 71-63 in favor of the Golden Falcons with 9:22 left to play. Felician then went on a 10-3 run to increase the lead back to 15, 81-66, with 6:44 showing on the clock.
Mercy later cut the deficit to 11, 84-73, after a Griffin jumper at the 3:34 mark. However, the visitors went on a 10-3 run to take a 94-76 lead with 1:32 left and held on for the victory.
Mercy shot 36.3 percent (29-of-80) from the floor, 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from downtown and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the foul line. Felician shot 50.0 percent (31-of-62) from the field, 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from beyond the arc and 77.4 percent (24-of-31) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 16th when they play at Post at 3 p.m.
