Seara Scores as No. 2 Women's Soccer Hosts No. 3 New York Tech in ECC Semifinal

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2019) – Despite a goal from senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the No. 2 seeded Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 3 seeded New York Tech in an East Coast Conference (ECC) Women's Soccer Championship Semifinal on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (13-3-2) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and suffer their first home loss of the season. The Bears (7-6-3) advance to the ECC Championship Game for the first time on Sunday where they will face the winner of Bridgeport/Molloy.

Seara scored her sixth goal of the season and senior Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) dished out her fifth assist of the year. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made five saves to take the loss.

New York Tech received goals from Kelly Gerdes and Hannah Franco and Nicole Genis made four saves to earn the win.

Elizarraras and sophomore Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) recorded the game's first two shots on goal in the 8th and 16th minutes. Torres answered with three saves in a six-minute span to keep the game scoreless.

The Bears would score first in the 40th minute when Torres fouled Casey Luongo in the box and Gerdes connected on a penalty kick to make it 1-0. It remained 1-0 at halftime with New York Tech holding an 8-5 edge in shots.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors heading into the 76th minute when Elizarraras fed Seara who finished in the left side of the net to even the score up at 1-1.

New York Tech regained the lead in the 82nd minute when Luongo passed the ball to Franco on a 2v1 and Franco fired into the lower left corner of the goal to make it 2-1.

The Mavericks had a pair of quality scoring chances in the 88th and 90th minutes on shots by RaeAnn Ioannou (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and Elizarraras but both sailed high to keep the game at 2-1. The Bears held on for the victory and advanced to the ECC Championship Game for the first time.

New York Tech held a 14-11 edge in shots and Mercy held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks now await a possible NCAA Tournament berth on Monday.
