PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2019) – Led by a game-high 28 points and ten rebounds from junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team earned a 79-63 win over Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (1-3) earn their first win of the season, while the Tigers (1-1) lose for the first time.
Brown went 10-of-16 from the field and freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a career-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds and six assists. Senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had ten points and sophomore Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) had eight points.
Holy Family was led by Anjelai Hayes who had a team-high 14 points.
The Tigers took a 6-4 lead at the 6:37 mark of the first quarter, but the Mavericks answered with a 5-0 run to take a 9-6 lead with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. Holy Family came back on a 4-0 spurt to retake the lead at 10-9, but Mercy ended the quarter on a 10-0 run, capped off by a Trinity Hudson (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) three, which gave the Mavericks a 19-10 lead after the first quarter.
Mercy opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run, finished off by a Wall trifecta, which gave the Mavericks a 29-10 lead with 7:25 remaining in the half. Holy Family scored seven straight points to make it a 12-point game, 29-17, and later cut the deficit to nine, 31-22, with 4:21 left in the period. Mercy increased the lead back to 14, 37-23, after a Brown jumper before the hosts went on a 7-0 run to cut the Mercy lead to seven, 37-30, with 54 seconds on the clock. A Brown jumper gave the Mavericks a 39-30 lead at halftime.
Holy Family scored the first points of the second half to make it 39-32. However, Mercy tallied seven straight points to build the lead to 14, 46-32, with 6:50 left in the third quarter. The Tigers ensued with a 10-2 run to get within six, 48-42, at the 4:16 mark, but the Mavericks quickly came back on a 12-3 run, capped off by another Wall three, which put Mercy up 15, 60-45. Holy Family closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to head into the fourth quarter down, 60-51.
Mercy started the fourth quarter with four straight points to build the lead to 13, 64-51, with 7:40 remaining. Holy Family trimmed the lead to nine, 69-60, following a Mia Ehling three at the 5:55 mark, but the Mavericks ended the game on a 10-3 run to pull away from the hosts and earn their first win.
Mercy shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from downtown and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the foul line. Holy Family shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the field, 16.0 percent (4-of-25) from beyond the arc and 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 20th when they host Wilmington at 5 p.m.
