DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2019) – Led by four different Mavericks scoring, the RV Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 4-0 Senior Day victory over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, graduate student Juan Lares (Orlando, Fla./Warner University) and seniors Jose Izarra (Valencia, Venezuela/Marshalltown CC), Kevin Rodriguez (Queens, N.Y./ASA College), Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College), Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino), Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno), Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) and Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Technicas ORT) were recognized for their contributions to the men's soccer program.
The Mavericks (12-3-2, 5-2 ECC) end their three-game winless streak and end the regular season 9-0-1 at home. With the win over the Redhawks (9-6-1, 5-2 ECC), Mercy moves back into first place in the ECC standings with one game left.
Mangada, sophomores Rainiero Salas (Panama City, Panama/Alderson Broaddus University) and Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) and redshirt freshman Steven Fernandez (Rego Park, N.Y./Iona College) all scored. It was Mangada's seventh goal of the season, the first for Salas, the fourth for Jones and the third for Fernandez. Rebolledo-Camus had two assists and Jones also added an assist. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) made two saves to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Dan Reger and Dylan Ruiz who both had a shot on goal. Jared Gibbons made six saves to take the loss.
Gibbons made his first save on a Rebolledo-Camus shot in the 10th minute and that was the lone shot on goal in the game until the 39th minute. Rebolledo-Camus fed Mangada and the senior finished on the left side of the field to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
Just under a minute later, the Redhawks drew a penalty kick and Serrano stepped up and made a key save on Reger's attempt to keep the score 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Mercy holding a 10-2 edge in shots.
The score remained 1-0 heading into the late moments of the game when Salas netted his goal in the 80th minute to make it 2-0. The sophomore fired a shot after a failed clear by the Redhawks to give Mercy an insurance goal.
Mercy made it 3-0 in the 87th minute when Jones fed a cross to Fernandez and Fernandez finished for his third goal of the season. Just under a minute later, Rebolledo-Camus assisted on a Jones goal to give the Mavericks a 4-0 lead. Mercy continued to apply pressure and forced Gibbons to make two more saves and earned the Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 22-5 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 9th when they play at District of Columbia at 1 p.m.
