DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2019) – Powered by four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team earned a 70-52 win over Nyack College on Saturday afternoon at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (3-3) have won three games in a row for the first time since 2014-15, while the Warriors (2-2) fall to .500 on the year.
Junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) led the way with a double-double by way of 15 points and ten rebounds. Freshman Trinity Hudson (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) had a career-high 11 points and sophomore Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) finished with ten points and eight rebounds. Freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had ten points, four rebounds and four assists and sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored nine points.
Nyack was led by Kyla Given who had a game-high-tying 15 points.
The Warriors took an early 8-4 lead at the 6:27 mark of the first quarter and later increased the lead to five, 15-10, with 1:42 remaining in the quarter. Mercy ended the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Hudson layup, which put the Mavericks up 17-15 after one quarter.
Mercy opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 24-15 after a Hudson three with 8:56 remaining in the half. Nyack made it 24-17 before the Mavericks answered with a 14-2 run to take their largest lead of the half, 38-19, with 2:12 on the clock. The Warriors scored the final two points of the half to head into halftime down, 38-21.
The Mavericks started the third quarter on a 4-0 spurt, finished off by a Wall layup, which gave Mercy a 42-21 lead. Mercy later built the lead to 22 on two occasions and headed into the fourth quarter up 52-31.
Mercy took a 55-33 lead after a Brown three with 9:06 left to play. Nyack came back on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 15, 55-40, with 8:04 remaining. The Warriors later made it a 14-point game, 63-49, following a Given three at the 2:53 mark. Mercy followed with five straight points to increase the lead back to 19, 68-49, with 1:50 on the clock and held on for the victory.
Mercy shot 34.3 percent (24-of-70) from the floor, 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from downtown and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the foul line. Nyack shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field, 15.0 percent (3-of-20) from beyond the arc and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 49-42 edge on the boards and held a 23-10 edge in points off turnovers.
