Cuffey and Lee Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Hosts No. 8 Daemen

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 13, 2019) – Despite junior Dayvon Cuffey (Baltimore, Md./Anne Arundel CC) and sophomore Korey Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 103-59 decision to ECC foe No. 8 Daemen College on Friday night at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (1-9, 0-2 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Wildcats (11-1, 2-0 ECC) have won 11 games in a row.

Cuffey had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds on 4-of-9 shooting. Lee had a season-high ten points with five rebounds and sophomore Dondre Barnes (Atlanta, Ga./South Atlanta) had nine points and three assists. Junior Nakeem Hamilton (Bronx, N.Y./Hostos CC) netted eight points and senior Lamont Williams Jr. (Irvington, N.J./County College of Morris) and freshman Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) both recorded seven points. Freshman Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) added six points and three rebounds off the bench.

Daemen was led by Andrew Sischo who had a game-high 26 points.

Mercy scored the game's first point and held a 5-4 lead after a Barnes layup at the 16:29 mark of the first half. Daemen stormed back on a 14-2 run to take an 18-7 lead with 11:09 remaining in the half. Mercy cut the deficit to eight, 18-10, following a Hamilton three at the 10:27 mark, but the Wildcats ensued with a 7-0 spurt to increase the lead to 15, 25-10, with 8:24 left in the first half.

A Lee layup at the 2:52 mark cut the Daemen lead to 11, 36-25. However, the Wildcats closed the half on a 9-0 run to take a 45-25 lead at halftime.

Mercy made it a 15-point game, 55-40, following a Hamilton layup with 14:33 remaining. The Wildcats later held a 16-point lead, 61-45, following a Barnes layup with 11:31 on the clock. Daemen closed the game on a 42-14 run to pull away from the Mavericks and earn the win.

Mercy shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor, 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from downtown and 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the foul line. Daemen shot 54.8 percent (40-of-73) from the field, 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 51-32 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, December 15th when they host Roberts Wesleyan in a CODA Awareness Game at 2 p.m.
