DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2019) – Despite a game-high 15 points and 13 rebounds from junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 59-47 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon in a CODA Awareness Game at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (6-5, 0-2 ECC) have dropped two games in a row, while the Redhawks (5-5, 1-2 ECC) pick up their first ECC win.
Sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also scored in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) had five points and 12 rebounds and freshman Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had five points and eight rebounds.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Dimitra Gkizani and Taryn Wilson who both had a team-high 14 points.
The Redhawks took an 11-7 lead at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter following an Emily Miller layup. A Barnard three and Bender free throw tied the score at 11-11 before the visitors went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-11 lead. The teams traded three-pointers to end the quarter, giving Roberts Wesleyan a 20-14 lead after one quarter of play.
The guests started the second quarter on a 6-2 run to increase the lead to ten, 26-16, at the 7:55 mark. The Redhawks later held a 29-20 lead with 4:55 remaining in the half before Mercy ended the half on a 5-0 run to head into halftime down, 29-25.
Mercy opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run, capped off by a Brown layup, which gave the Mavericks a 33-29 lead. A Roberts Wesleyan free throw made it 33-30 at the 5:19 mark, but Mercy answered with an 11-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 44-32, with 50 seconds remaining in the quarter. A Gkizani layup sent the Mavericks into the fourth quarter up ten, 44-34. Mercy held the Redhawks to just five points in the third quarter and 1-of-14 shooting to take the lead.
Roberts Wesleyan began the fourth quarter on a 19-0 run, capped off by a Miller three, which gave the visitors a 53-44 lead with 2:15 remaining. A free throw from Lake and two free throws from Barnard made it 53-47 with 2:06 on the clock. The Redhawks ended the game on a 6-0 run to pull away from the Mavericks and earn the win.
Mercy shot 18.9 percent (14-of-74) from the floor, 15.4 percent (4-of-26) from downtown and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field, 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from beyond the arc and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 51-49 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, December 21st when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m.
