AMHERST, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2019) – Despite a team-high ten points from sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 90-48 decision to ECC foe Daemen College on Friday night.
The Mavericks (4-23, 1-16 ECC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Wildcats (17-9, 14-3 ECC) have won two games in a row.
Brown added a team-high four assists and had three rebounds. Junior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had eight points and freshman Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) netted eight points and three rebounds. Senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) recorded eight points and two rebounds.
Daemen was led by Jordan Heinold who had a game-high 21 points.
Mercy took a 3-2 lead at the 9:20 mark on a Collier three-pointer before Daemen answered with a three of their own to take a 5-3 lead. Brown nailed a jumper to tie the game up at 5-5 with 8:48 left in the opening quarter. The Wildcats ended the quarter on a 21-0 run to take a 26-5 lead after one quarter of play.
Daemen opened the second quarter on a 13-0 run, capping off a 34-0 run from the first quarter, that gave the Wildcats a 39-5 lead with 5:16 left in the half. A Perez three at the 4:48 mark ended the run, but Daemen would head into halftime up, 51-14.
The Wildcats outscored the Mavericks 23-14 in the third quarter to take a 74-28 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Mercy battled in the fourth quarter and outscored the hosts, 20-16, in the fourth quarter, but it was enough as Daemen came away with the win. Brown netted six points in the frame and Perez and freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) both recorded five points.
Mercy shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the floor, 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from downtown and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the foul line. Daemen shot 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field, 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 44-21 edge on the glass and held a 17-2 edge in second chance points.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks conclude their season on Sunday, March 3rd when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
