DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2019) –Powered by a game-high eight points from senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the No. 3 Mercy College men's lacrosse team opened up ECC play with a 9-6 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-0, 1-0 ECC) continue their best start in program history, while the Redhawks (3-3, 0-1 ECC) drop their ECC opener.
MacSpadyen finished with a game-high four goals and four assists. Junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two goals and an assist and senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) all recorded a goal and an assist. Senior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a game-high six caused turnovers and eight ground balls and senior Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 4-of-6 on faceoffs. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made eight saves to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Cody Menzies who had a team-high three goals and an assist. Pat Hynes made 15 saves to take the loss.
MacSpadyen got the Mavericks on the board first at the 12:03 mark on an unassisted goal. Nearly ten minutes went by before Chillianis scored a man-up goal from MacSpadyen to make it 2-0 with 3:12 left in the first quarter.
A Michael Pierog goal for the Redhawks made it 2-1, but MacSpadyen answered right back to give Mercy a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play.
McPartland made it 4-1 following a pass from MacSpadyen at the 11:55 mark of the second quarter. Menzies made it 4-2 before Scorcia tallied his lone goal of the day with 8:13 remaining in the quarter to make it 5-2.
Roberts Wesleyan closed the quarter out with three straight goals to tie the game up at 5-5 heading into halftime.
MacSpadyen netted his third of the game to make it 6-5 just under two minutes into the third quarter. Menzies evened the game up at 6-6 at the 10:35 mark. The game remained tied at 6-6 until MacSpadyen scored with 55 seconds left in the third to give Mercy a 7-6 lead after three quarters.
Janavey gave the Mavericks a two-goal lead with 11:04 remaining following another assist from MacSpadyen. The Mercy defense would hold the Redhawks scoreless in the fourth quarter and McPartland put the finishing touches on the win with a late goal from Chillianis.
Mercy held a 41-20 edge in shots and a 39-32 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 23rd when they host Molloy at 3 p.m.
