Brandt Records an RBI as Softball Plays at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2019) – Despite an RBI from freshman Jessica Brandt (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) in game two, the Mercy College softball team dropped 9-0 and 4-3 decisions to Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.

The Mavericks (9-7) have dropped three of four, while the Panthers (5-10) have won three of four.

Game 1: Adelphi 9, Mercy 0

It remained 0-0 until the bottom of the second when the hosts scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead. After the Mavericks went down in order in the top of the third, Adelphi tacked on six more runs to take a 9-0 lead after three innings.

The Mavericks could only muster three hits in the game and threatened in the second inning after back-to-back hits from freshmen Ylannah Bowman (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) and Jordan DiGiacinto (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) but were unable to score. Bowman also singled in the fourth inning, but was left at third after a groundout to end the inning.

Mercy would be unable to score in the top of the fifth and Adelphi earned a 9-0 win via the run-rule.

Bowman went 2-for-2 and DiGiacinto went 1-for-1. Freshman Katelyn Shephard (Beaumont, Calif./Beaumont) went 2.0 innings with three runs allowed to take the loss.

Adelphi was led by Emily Whitman who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ally Muller tossed a complete game to earn the win.

Game 2: Adelphi 4, Mercy 3

Adelphi struck first in game two with a run on a groundout to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers added on a run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead after four innings of play.

Mercy battled back and came back with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) doubled to lead off the inning and was brought home in the next at bat by Brandt to make it 2-1. Sophomore Casey Akers (Keller, Texas/Timber Creek) then singled to put runners on first and third before stealing second. Akers and freshman Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High), who pinch ran for Brandt, would come around to score after junior Erika Byrne (San Diego, Calif./San Diego Mesa College) reached on an error by the shortstop, giving Mercy a 3-2 lead.

Adelphi took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on four hits. Mercy went down in order in the top of the seventh to give the Panthers the sweep.

Brandt went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Akers went 1-for-1. Senior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) went 2-for-3 and Gorman went 1-for-3. Gorman also tossed a complete game in the circle with four runs allowed to take the loss.
