Ten Different Mavericks Score as No. 5/6 Men's Lacrosse Earns 18-8 Win Over RV Southern N.H.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2019) – Powered by ten different Mavericks scoring, the No. 5/6 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 18-8 victory over RV Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-0) start 5-0 for the first time since 2013, while the Penmen (1-2) fall below .500 on the year.

Senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) recorded three goals and two assists and is now two goals shy of 100. Senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) posted three goals and an assist and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) finished with two goals, four assists and three ground balls. Junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) netted two goals and an assist and freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) had three goals. Senior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a goal and two assists. Senior Luke Baron (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), junior Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and freshman Joe Poggio (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also scored and junior Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) added an assist. Junior Kyle Gardner (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a game-high four caused turnovers and junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 16-of-19 on faceoffs with five ground balls. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 12 saves in 52:04 minutes of action to earn the win.

Southern N.H. was led by Landon Goguen who had two goals and an assist. Alex Sturgess played the first three quarters in net with eight saves to take the loss.

Gibbons got the Mavericks out to an early 1-0 lead less than a minute in. The Penmen tied the game up at 1-1 at the 11:33 mark on a Stephen Dubois goal. Mercy closed out the quarter with four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. MacSpadyen got the rally started and Poggio, Baron and McPartland ended the run with goals to give Mercy a four-goal lead.

Southern N.H. started the second quarter with three straight goals to make it a one-goal game, 5-4, with 10:30 left in the period. Mercy responded with four goals in less than a two minute span that increased the lead to 9-4 with 7:01 remaining in the quarter. McPartland and Gibbons started the run with unassisted goals and MacSpadyen and Scorcia found the back of the net on assists from Gibbons and Chillianis to give Mercy some cushion. A Goguen goal made it 9-5, but back-to-back goals from Janavey put the lead to six, 11-5, with 1:39 on the clock. A late Southern N.H. goal made it 11-6 at halftime.

Chillianis opened the third quarter with a goal at the 13:12 mark to increase the lead to back to six, 12-6. Goguen followed with his second of the day, but the Mavericks closed the quarter with the final four goals to take a 16-7 lead after three quarters. Janavey tallied a man-up goal and Chillianis, Marzocca and MacSpadyen all scored in the quarter to give Mercy a comfortable lead heading to the final quarter.

Chillianis and DeVito scored in the fourth quarter to make it 18-7 and the Mavericks would cruise the rest of the way in securing their fifth straight win.

Mercy held a 39-37 edge in shots, a 46-38 edge in ground balls and went 18-of-28 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 6th when they host Post at 3 p.m.
