LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Mar. 20, 2019) – Powered by a game-high seven goals and eight draw controls from senior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), the No. 16/18 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-6 win over Georgian Court University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (5-2) snap a two-game losing streak with the win, while the Lions (4-4) fall to .500 on the year.
Isnardi also added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had four goals and an assist and sophomores Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each produced two goals and an assist. Freshman Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded a goal and two assists and junior Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and freshman Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) both netted a goal and an assist. Freshman Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had an assist and freshmen Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) both had two caused turnovers. Sophomore Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) made two saves in 51:04 minutes of action to earn the win. Freshman Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made one save in the final 8:56.
Georgian Court was led by Samantha Fernandez who had a team-high four goals. Amber Neumann made one save in 23:57 minutes of action to take the loss.
Cummings opened the scoring for Mercy with her first collegiate goal less than a minute in. Fernandez tied the game up at 1-1 just over a minute later. Sanchez came back with two straight goals to put Mercy ahead, 3-1, with 24:06 left in the first half.
Fernandez and Madison Heck followed with two straight goals of their own to tie the game up at 3-3 with 22:51 on the clock. Isnardi and Fernandez traded goals to make it 4-4 at the 18:12 mark. The Mavericks ended the half with eight straight goals to take a 12-4 lead at halftime. Shimborske and Corace got the run started before Isnardi tallied two straight goals to make it 8-4. Sanchez netted two more goals to bring the score to 10-4 and Isnardi closed the half with two unanswered goals to give the Mavericks an eight-goal lead at halftime.
Isnardi and Shimborske opened the scoring in the second half to give Mercy a 14-4 lead with 26:51 remaining. Fernandez made it 14-5 after a free position goal with 24:07 on the clock. Corace, Isnardi, Mackie and Reese responded back with four straight goals to give the Mavericks their largest lead of the game, 18-5, with 14 minutes left. A late goal by Georgian Court would not be enough, giving Mercy the win.
Mercy held a 33-15 edge in shots and Georgian Court held a 17-16 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 23rd when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
