DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2019) – Powered by a game-high six points from junior Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), the No. 14/17 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 21-3 victory over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College in a CODA Awareness Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (12-4, 6-1 ECC) have won four games in a row, while the Spartans (8-8, 2-5 ECC) fall to .500 on the year.
Mackie finished with two goals and four assists and senior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) had a game-high five goals and 11 draw controls. Junior Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had three goals and an assist and freshmen Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) both had two goals and an assist. Senior Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), sophomore Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and freshman Erin Chalich (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) all had a goal and an assist. Junior Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), sophomore Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshmen Katie Jelliffe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also scored. Freshman Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had two assists and three ground balls and sophomore Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had an assist. Senior Erin Dingman (Watertown, N.Y./Onondaga CC) had an assist and a game-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) made one save in the first 33:17 minutes of action to pick up the win and freshman Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made three saves in the final 26:43.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Kaitlyn Gutenberger who had a team-high two goals. Katie Feigenbaum made six saves to take the loss.
Mercy took total control of the game from the start, taking a 16-0 lead with 26:53 remaining in the second half. Isnardi started the scoring just 25 seconds in off an assist from Mackie. Grzelaczyk and Isnardi followed with unassisted goals to make it 3-0 at the 24:54 mark.
Sanchez, Isnardi and Mackie tallied three more goals to give Mercy a 6-0 lead with 23:41 left in the first half. Isnardi netted her fourth goal of the half following an assist from Brady, which made it 7-0. Sanchez, Reese and Jelliffe then posted three more unassisted goals to give the Mavericks a commanding 10-0 lead with 16:50 left in the opening half.
Bishop, Sergio, Mackie and Sanchez ended the half with goals to give Mercy a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Shimborske and Isnardi opened the scoring in the second half on assists from Mackie to give the Mavericks a 16-0 lead. The Spartans finally got on the board with 25:16 remaining to make it 16-1 and tacked on two more goals to bring the score to 16-3 with 12:24 left to play.
Chalich, Spinazzola, Bishop, Reese and Cotton scored the final five goals for Mercy to give the Mavericks the 21-3 win.
Mercy held a 32-8 edge in shots, an 18-10 edge in ground balls and an 18-6 advantage in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 24th when they host NYIT at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
