DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2019) – Despite three different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College softball team dropped 10-2 and 6-2 decisions to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (21-25, 7-13 ECC) have dropped seven of their last eight games, while the Purple Knights (28-12, 13-7 ECC) have won four of their last six games.
Game 1: Bridgeport 10, Mercy 2
Bridgeport scored four runs on three hits and a Mercy error to take a 4-0 lead. The Mavericks answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 4-2. Senior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) singled and advanced to second on a passed ball before freshman Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High) walked. Newham later advanced to third on a wild pitch and Crawford stole second to put runners on second and third. Sophomore Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) walked to load the bases before senior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) hit a two-run double to right field, which made it 4-2.
The Purple Knights scored two runs in the second, a run in the third, a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to earn a 10-2 victory after five innings via the run-rule.
Stevens went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Newham went 2-for-3. Stevens also went 4.0 innings in the circle with five earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Bridgeport was led by Samantha Sabor who had a game-high four RBI. Amanda Staheli pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Game 2: Bridgeport 6, Mercy 2
The Purple Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Sabor two-run double. Mercy tied the game up at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the first. Newham doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a bunt before Mueller singled her home to make it 2-1. Stevens singled to move Mueller to third. Freshman Jordan DiGiacinto (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) then delivered an RBI single to right field which tied the game up at 2-2.
After a scoreless second inning, Bridgeport scored a run in the third, two runs in the fourth and a run in the sixth to earn a 6-2 victory over the Mavericks.
Stevens went 2-for-3 and Mueller and DiGiacinto both went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) allowed five earned runs in 6.0 innings to take the loss.
Bridgeport was led by Sabor who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Miranda Hillman pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 25th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 2:30 p.m.
