DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2019) – Powered by ten different Mavericks scoring, the No. 6/7 Mercy College men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with an 18-7 victory over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (15-1, 6-0 ECC) finish with their first-ever undefeated ECC slate, while the Spartans (5-8, 1-5 ECC) have dropped two games in a row.
Junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) led the Mavericks with a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists and senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) had two goals and two assists. Senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had three goals and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a goal and five assists. Freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) had a goal and two assists and senior Matthew DeFeo (Upper Brookville, N.Y./St. Dominic's) had two goals. Sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had two assists and senior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC), juniors Ricky Marchelos (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Herricks) and Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and freshman Joe Poggio (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also scored. Rey also went 17-of-18 on faceoffs and had a game-high nine ground balls. Senior Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 10-of-10 on faceoffs and had three ground balls. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made four saves in the first 37:58 minutes of action to earn the win. Freshman Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) made four saves without allowing a goal in 9:34 minutes of action.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Tyler Senatore who had a team-high three goals. Ryan Mello made 17 saves to take the loss.
Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute of action on goals from McPartland and Gibbons. Thomas Sharp scored at the 6:22 mark for the Spartans to make it 2-1. The Mavericks closed out the quarter with four straight goals to take a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. Chillianis started the run before McPartland, MacSpadyen and another from Chillianis gave Mercy a five-goal lead.
MacSpadyen started the scoring in the second quarter off an assist from Scorcia to make it 7-1 at the 12:47 mark. Senatore scored the lone Spartan goal of the quarter with 5:29 left in the period to make it 7-2. Marzocca, McPartland, Rey and Poggio closed out the half with goals to give Mercy an 11-2 lead at halftime.
St. Thomas Aquinas scored the first goal of the third quarter at the 12:46 mark to make it 11-3 before Janavey and McPartland answered with goals to make it 13-3 with 10:26 left in the quarter. The Spartans rallied with two unanswered goals to get within 13-5, but a Chillianis goal before the end of the quarter gave Mercy a 14-5 lead after three quarters.
McPartland scored his final goal of the day at the 14:43 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 15-5. Senatore answered with a goal to make it 15-6, but DeFeo answered with two goals and Marchelos added another to give the Mavericks a commanding 18-6 lead with 7:42 remaining. Senatore scored a late goal for the Spartans but it was not enough as Mercy came away with the win.
Mercy held a 49-24 edge in shots, a 42-31 edge in ground balls and went 27-of-28 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, May 1st when they host an ECC Semifinal matchup at 3 p.m.
