SYRACUSE, N.Y. (May 11, 2019) – Despite four different Mavericks scoring, the No. 4 seeded Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-4 decision to No. 1 seeded Le Moyne College in a 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
The Mavericks (18-2) see their five-game winning streak come to an end. Mercy ends their season with a new school record in wins, first ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, first NCAA Tournament appearance and first NCAA Tournament win. The Dolphins (16-2) advance to the National Semifinals where they will face No. 6 seed Merrimack.
Seniors Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC), sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) scored. Freshman Joe Poggio (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) dished out an assist. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made ten saves to take the loss.
Le Moyne was led by Matt Hutchings who had a game-high three goals. Riley Smith played the first 57:00 minutes in goal with six saves to earn the win.
The Dolphins opened the scoring at the 12:57 mark of the first quarter on a Hutchings goal. Hutchings later made it 2-0 with 11:31 left in the opening quarter. Gibbons made it 2-1 with his goal of the day with 9:39 remaining in the quarter. Le Moyne closed the quarter out with two goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
The hosts scored the first five goals of the second quarter to take a 9-1 lead with less than a minute to play in the first half. Chillianis scored with nine seconds on the clock to send Mercy into halftime down, 9-2.
Le Moyne scored all three goals in the third quarter to take a 12-2 lead after three quarters.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 14-2 with 8:05 remaining. Scorcia and DeCeglia followed with goals to make it 14-4 with 4:38 remaining. The deficit proved too much to overcome and Le Moyne earned the win.
Le Moyne held a 41-14 edge in shots, a 30-17 edge in ground balls and won 14-of-22 faceoffs.
