EASTON, Mass. (Sept. 14, 2019) – Despite a career-high eight kills from freshman Ayzaline Garay (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx School of Law, Government and Justice), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 14-25) decision to Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Stonehill College.

The Mavericks (3-3) fall to .500 on the year, while the Greyhounds (1-3) pick up their first win of the season.

Garay had a team-high eight kills and junior Natalia Garcia (Vega Baja, P.R./Turabo University) had a team-high 19 assists and six digs. Sophomore Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had six kills and five digs.

Assumption was led by Ariana Orcera who had a match-high nine kills.

The opening set saw the teams tied at 7-7 before the Greyhounds rattled off five straight points to take a 12-7 lead. Mercy rallied with a 7-1 run, capped off by a Vulic kill, to take a 14-13 lead. Assumption then followed with a 4-0 run to retake the lead at 17-14 and led the rest of the way earning a 25-18 win in set one.

Mercy jumped out to a 10-6 lead in set two, leading to an Assumption timeout. Out of the timeout, the Greyhounds went on a 12-5 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Mavericks cut the deficit to two, 24-22, but an Orcera kill gave Assumption a 25-22 set two win.

The Greyhounds took a 7-1 lead in set three before a Garay kill later in the set made it 10-7. However, Assumption closed out the set on a 15-7 run to secure the set and match.

Mercy had 24 kills, 29 digs and hit .042. Assumption had 34 kills, 39 digs and hit .224.

Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Stonehill and Pittsburgh-Johnstown at Stonehill starting at 10 a.m.
