DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2019) – Despite a match-high-tying 11 kills from senior Imani DeBose (Carson, Calif./The College of New Rochelle), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 21-25) decision to ECC foe University of Bridgeport in their ECC opener on Thursday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (4-8, 0-1 ECC) fail to build off their win on Saturday, while the Purple Knights (12-2, 1-0 ECC) open up ECC play with a win.
DeBose had 11 kills and hit .312 and junior Natalia Garcia (Vega Baja, P.R./Turabo University) had six kills, 23 assists and six digs. Junior Adriana Lopez-Soto (Gurabo, P.R./Notre Dame HS) had 12 digs and sophomore Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had 12 digs and four kills.
Bridgeport was led by Morgan Knight who had a match-high-tying 11 kills.
The Purple Knights took a 9-3 lead in the opening set, forcing a Mercy timeout. After the timeout, the Mavericks battled back and cut the deficit to two, 14-12, after a DeBose kill. Bridgeport followed with a 7-2 run to build a 21-14 lead, but Mercy answered back on an 8-3 run to get within, 24-22. Following a Bridgeport timeout, Makayla Maroney recorded a kill to give the Purple Knights a 25-22 win in set one.
Mercy jumped out to an 8-6 lead in set two following a Garcia kill. Bridgeport ensued with a 13-2 run to take a 19-10 lead and led the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Bridgeport took a 5-1 lead in set three and led 11-4 after an Amanda Keller kill. Mercy continued to battle and made it a one-point game, 17-16, leading to a Purple Knight timeout. After the timeout, Bridgeport went on a 7-3 spurt to build a 24-19 lead. Back-to-back points by the Mavericks made it 24-21, but Knight closed out the set with a kill to give the Purple Knights the victory.
Mercy hit .181 with 34 kills and 45 digs and Bridgeport hit .239 with 40 kills and 50 digs.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 28th when they host Bentley and AIC starting at 11 a.m.
