AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2019) – Powered by goals from redshirt freshman Steven Fernandez (Rego Park, N.Y./Iona College), senior Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno) and sophomore Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge), the No. 9 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over ECC foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Karrer Field.
The Mavericks (7-0-1, 2-0 ECC) have won six games in a row and is off to their best start in over 30 years, while the Wildcats (0-7, 0-2 ECC) remain winless on the year.
Fernandez netted his second goal of the year, Corral recorded his fourth and Jones produced his first goal of the year. Seniors Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) and Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) and juniors Francisco Ricci (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Warner University) and Nigel Hawthorne (Queens, N.Y./Millersville University) added assists. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) played the full 90 minutes in goal to earn the win.
Daemen was led by Chris Cox who scored and Eithan Hahn made ten saves to take the loss.
The Mavericks recorded the first two shots on goal in the 18th and 21st minutes, but both were stopped by Hahn to keep the game scoreless. Hahn made two more saves in the half before Cox scored in the 36th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Hahn stopped another shot in the 39th minute to send Daemen into halftime up, 1-0.
Hahn stopped two more shots to open the second half, but Fernandez broke through with the Mavericks first goal in the 55th minute off an assist from Hawthorne to make it 1-1.
Mercy continued to apply pressure and Corral gave the Mavericks the lead in the 72nd minute following assists from Ricci and Rozenblum. The Mavericks added on a third goal in the 79th minute when Jones scored after an assist from Mangada to give Mercy a 3-1 lead. The Mavericks held a 16-1 edge in shots in the second half on their way to the victory.
Mercy held a 29-2 edge in shots and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 2nd when they play at Georgian Court at 3:30 p.m.
