Game Preview: Volleyball Hosts Nyack, Saint Rose, Post and Franklin Pierce This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2019) – The Mercy College volleyball team opens up their 2019 season this weekend with matches against Nyack, Saint Rose, Post and Franklin Pierce on Friday and Saturday at Victory Gym for the Long Island Invitational.

Last Meeting

Vs. Nyack – Mercy earned a 3-1 victory over the Warriors on October 12, 2018.
Vs. Saint Rose – Saint Rose earned a 3-0 victory over the Mavericks on August 29, 2018.
Vs. Post – Post earned a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks on September 11, 2012.
Vs. Franklin Pierce – Franklin Pierce earned a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks on September 6, 2014.

Scouting the Mavericks

The Mavericks are coming off their best season since 2005 and are looking to make the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2008. Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll and will look to several newcomers and returners to get back to the ECC Tournament. Leading the returners is junior Leilani Vazquez who led the team with 326 kills and was second on the team with 373 digs. Also returning is sophomore Loreto Nunez Casal who had 183 kills as a freshman. Sophomore Sophia Flanders returns after posting 232 assists last season. Leading the newcomers are College of New Rochelle senior transfers Imani DeBose and NeKendra Liddie. DeBose was named to the 2018 All-HVIAC Volleyball Team and led the HVIAC with 260 kills. Liddie recorded 106 kills and 37 blocks as a junior last year.

Scouting the Warriors

Nyack finished 11-18 last season and made the CACC Tournament last season. The Warriors return junior Kyra Zuhlke who had a team-high 333 kills and 85 blocks last season. Also returning is junior British Dawson who had a team-high 437 digs a season ago. Nyack brings back junior Rachel Medin who paced the team with 864 assists last year.

Scouting the Golden Knights

Saint Rose ended last year with a 17-12 record and made the NE-10 Conference Tournament. The Golden Knights were led last year by Stevie Schweitzer who had a team-high 321 kills last season. Also coming back is Kyla Archie who posted 221 kills last year. Tina Ceriello also returns after leading Saint Rose with 582 digs.

Scouting the Eagles

Post concluded last season 18-15 and played in the CACC Tournament. The Eagles are led by senior Shannon Veale who was third on the team last season with 218 kills. Also returning is junior Suzy Boulay who was third on the team with 308 digs.

Scouting the Ravens

Franklin Pierce went 5-25 last season and is led by sophomore Cierra Dolan who was second on the team last year with 224 kills. Senior Abigail Garnhart also returns after posting 223 kills a season ago. Junior Mary Pease returns after leading the team with 654 assists and senior Jocelyn Moody comes back after ranking third on the team with 274 digs.

Mercy will host Dominican on Tuesday, September 10th at 7 p.m.
